We love birdhouses. For one thing, they're the perfect house-warming gift. Most people are
pretty picky about what goes in their home. Is it something they already have? Does it match
their furniture? Artwork is always risky. Anyone can use a birdhouse. (Well, as long as they
have a yard.) And the best thing is you're helping birds have babies!
Of course, our birdhouses are not run of the mill. The materials and methods we use are intended to promote a positive deterioration over time. Shiny metal dulls and corrodes,
copper takes on a patina, painted colors fade, mildews and molds materialize, and rich
wood tones weather. Much like the aging of a fine wine, the process of deterioration
deepens the character of the object over time. We try to capitalize on Nature's process
of reclamation to make the man-made less perfect, more natural. So, our birdhouses have only
begun to realize their final glorious form.
The designs are great but the birdhouses are also completely functional. Each is designed to accommodate specific
species of birds. For the box, we use rot resistant redwood and incorporate a metal
woodpecker ring around the opening. Woodpecker ring? For some reason, woodpeckers like to
chisel out the openings of birdhouses, eventually making them unsuitable for the target
species. Finally, we provide removable lids so the boxes can be cleaned out each year.
